Here we are continuing on our little LEGO tour of Shanghai and after the wonderful visit to the LEGO Brand Store in Shanghai Disneyland, we have found ourselves at the Shanghai LEGOLAND Discover Center located on the second floor of Parkside Plaza.
If you have never been to a LEGOLAND Discovery Center, it is in essence and indoor LEGOLAND theme park. They have some of the same activities as their larger counterparts but their focus is more on the interaction and development of the kids.
As some of you may have encountered before, no adult is allowed to enter the premises unless accompanied by a child. If you’re single or without kids, there are some allocated days in the month in which you are able to enjoy the premises.
Upon walking through the huge LEGO man cut-out, I was brought into a small activity room which gave us a virtual tour of the LEGO factory. It showed us the process of creating a simple 2 x 4 brick and it even let you create your own virtual minifigure.
The Miniland is the definite highlight for me which is a minifigure sized recreation of some of Shanghai’s most famous buildings to the tune of 4 million LEGO bricks.
There are towering models of the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center, Customs House, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai tower and many others that populate the city’s sprawling skyline. There is even a working train model that runs below the miniland center stage.
But that is only just the half of it. The miniland area is equipped with a lighting system that simulates day and night and this LEGO city truly shines when the ambient light goes out. It is absolutely breathtaking when the LEGO models are lit by their own internal lighting in the darkness.
It is truly amazing to see what the LEGOLAND builders are able to come up with that is intrinsic to the city which the center is located.
After this trip, I’m definitely looking forward to check out the other country’s LEGOLAND Discovery centers just to experience the different types of architecture translated into LEGO. I implore you to check out the full gallery below as this sampling of photos hardly do the Minidland justice.
One of the more unique aspects of this LEGOLAND Discovery Center are the Model Builder Academy classes that are conducted on a daily basis. It introduces them to the love of the brick through a group building session where the instructor imparts some of the fundamental LEGO building techniques to get them started.
One of the similar attractions to the larger LEGOLANDS is the 4D Cinema experience which you watch a 3D animated movie with real life effects like water sprays and vibrating chairs. It might feel a bit gimmicky to the adults but the kids seem to love it.
There is also the “Build & Test” section where you are encouraged to construct your own car and race it down an incline.
The next section of the center is home to an indoor playground as well as party rooms for birthday celebrations and such. The cafeteria is also located here as is the Merlin’s Apprentice helicopter ride.
As with any LEGOLAND, there is always the BIG Shop where you can purchase your Pick-A-Brick or visit Build-A-Minifigure station.
The Pick-A-Brick is slightly different here as they go by weight as opposed to the tub system employed by the LEGO Brand/Certified Stores. It is CNY¥70 which is about SGD$14.90 / USD$10.17 per 100g.
The Pick-A-Brick price in Shanghai LEGOLAND Discovery Center is about the same as in LEGOLAND Malaysia which is RM43 (SGD$14.30 / USD$9.75).
The Build-A-Minifigure station charges CNY¥90 (SGD$18.25 / USD$13.07) for a pack of three custom minifigures which is definitely pricier than the Build-A-Minifigure in Singapore which is just SGD$14.90.
I would say that the LEGOLAND Discovery Center is just the right size to spend a good 3 hours here with your kids, trying all the different activities.
There are a tonne of LEGO models that adorn the walls and other parts of the center so keep your eye peeled, you never know where one would turn up!
