LEGO Super Mario: A Tale of Two Gifts with Purchase

We greeted the announcement of the LEGO Super Mario Starter Course (71360) pre-order last week with a little bit of confusion as to which gift with purchase we would be receiving.

The North American and some European regions (or anywhere with an official LEGO Brand Store) were reporting that their pre-orders came with the LEGO® Monty Mole and Super Mushroom (40414) Expansion Set which you can see below:

This is further verified with the receipt when you pre-order through the German Shop@Home website where it clearly states that the Monty Mole & Super Mushroom (40414) is included in the order.

While in Singapore (and other parts of South East Asia) we are to get a different gift with purchase in the form of the LEGO Super Mario Super Mushroom Surprise Expansion (30385) Polybag when we pre-order the starter course.

The two LEGO Certified Stores here in Singapore both advertise the same polybag gift with purchase:

It may seem a little bit unfair that are we getting two vastly different gift with purchases for a simultaneous global launch of brand new IP theme.

But sources tell me that the LEGO® Monty Mole and Super Mushroom (40414) Expansion Set will make its way to Singapore (and hopefully the rest of Asia) in some form so hold on to your wallets.

The scheduled launch for the LEGO Super Mario theme is in August which is still quite a while away and that is a lot of time for things to change. I’ll update with information when it becomes available.

  1. […] Brickfinder also noted the same with LEGO Certified Stores in Singapore when the Super Mushroom Surprise (30385) polybag was advertised as its promotional freebie for the LEGO Super Mario Starter Course. Now I completely understand that it’s just a marketing decision for LEGO to offer a better promotional deal over at their own turf, but from a LEGO fan’s perspective, especially if I missed that opportunity and has to settle only for a less attractive deal, then it really sucks. Just to be clear, I’m not against the idea of a polybag promo – LEGO in fact released polybags that even contained exclusive minifigs such as, for example, the LEGO Batman Classic TV Series – Mr. Freeze (30603) polybag from 2016. But again from a fan’s perspective, having two different freebies for one particular set offering, depending on where you will purchase it, sounds a bit odd and disadvantageous for a customer. […]
