The Amazon Prime announcement that they will be developing a television series based on the Lord of the Rings franchise, the first thing that popped up on every LEGO Castle builder was “will they release more LEGO Lord of the Rings sets”?
I honestly feel that it is quite likely as when there is money to be made, you can bet merchandising will be there.
Rebooted themes have done well at LEGO like the LEGO Harry Potter franchise. The introduction of the Fantastic Beasts series has allowed LEGO to dip back into the Wizarding World to produce more sets based on the franchise.
As the Amazon series is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, almost a thousand years before the events of the Lord of the Rings novel and movies, there is plenty of new ground to cover.
This could be the inlet that LEGO needs to revisit Middle Earth with some re-releases as well as new sets depicting scenes that we have yet to venture into. (ie. Ultimate Collector’s Edition Helms Deep perhaps?)
Honestly, it is a veritable gold mine as Castle fans have been deprived of a dedicated series for so long and new fans will be able to connect with these sets.
Heck, even the LEGO investor could want a piece of it just to speculate on the prices in the future. So there is really something for everyone if they do bring LEGO Lord of the Rings back.
The only hurdle I can think of is probably the licensing. Previously LEGO dealt with Warner Bros Consumer Products to produce LEGO Lord of the Rings sets. Now that this is an Amazon series, LEGO most likely need to negotiate a new deal with the streaming channel. Or they would have to deal with Tolkein’s estate directly.
It is fun to speculate but it would be a missed opportunity if LEGO does not capitalise on this since Amazon has already planned five seasons of it.
What are your thoughts? Would you want to see LEGO tackle the fires of Mount Doom again?
