Review: LEGO City Expansion Pack (40170)

This was really a chance find when I decided to pop into my local LEGO Certified Store (Singapore) and there were these two odd shaped boxes of LEGO accessories.

The box is slightly slanted on one side which is the flap that you open to get to the contents inside.

There are no numbered bags and that is fine because there are not that many parts to this set (I approximate about 90pcs). You could opt not to refer to the instructions as it might be a fun challenge to try and build the structures using only the box image.

It includes some nice accessories and parts but they are not unique which means that you could easily get them from your existing stash.

There are no minifigures in this set, just pure brick built structures to populate your LEGO City with like a bike rack, gantry and even a small busstop.

This is a great starter set for anyone who wants to get into LEGO as the structures are very simple to make and the parts are readily available.

The LEGO City Expansion Pack retails for  SGD$17.90 before the 10% member discount so it is closer to SGD$16.20 when actually purchased which equates to about $0.19 per piece which is a little on the high side but you have to consider that some of them are specialised parts (ie. Bicycle, Plant).

Expansion packs are not new to the LEGO world as there have been accessory packs for plants and trees since way back in the 80’s.

Hopefully they will bring the LEGO plant and tree packs again as it would be fantastic for landscapers.

There is also a City street baseplate compendium pack which has printed roads which you can form the layout for your city. Think of it as urban planning for kids. It also comes with parts for you to populate your city with.

No word yet on this other expansion pack so we will update this once we get more information.
