The answer that we have all been waiting patiently for has finally been revealed thanks to the guys at Brothers Brick who managed to get an advance copy of the set for review.
It has been confirmed that the LEGO Batman Movie Minifigure Series box will contain THREE complete sets of the LEGO Batman Movie Minifigure series!

This would mean that there will be exactly 3 copies of the same minifigure within the box which would mean that it is more beneficial to the consumer to purchase one box and share the other sets with their friends (or if you just want to keep all three).

We also have the pricing for the United States that is USD$3.99 which is the same price as the Disney Minifigure series when it came out.
At least there isn’t a huge price hike like for the other regions around the world.

Can we not simply by the box direct from Lego? Or maybe a gift set with 1 set complete?

Totally agree and can’t wait till they are out, But where can you purchase a box without overpaying for it.
Well, that is the recommended retail price so it is still a recommendation. I would try finding some stores which has some discounts that can be applied to LEGO or perhaps wait for a sale period.
LEGO charging €3.99 here in Europe feels like price gouging. You mentioned it is just r.r.p. but LEGO is rarely discounted in stores and I’ve never seen minifigs discounted.
