There was some chatter that there will be a price increase for the LEGO MINI Cooper (10242) here in Singapore come January 2017.
And now some of the LEGO Monobrand stores have already listed the new price of SGD$179.90 in anticipation for the new year which is a 20% jump.
The MINI Cooper (10242) was released here with the price tag of SGD$149.90 which was one of the few sets that the local RRP (Recommended Retail Price) was somewhat on par with our western counterparts (£74.99 / USD$99.99 / 89.99€).
That was in 2014 which is a good two years ago which begs the question why would there only now be a change in the recommended retail price and not earlier if there was an error in pricing?
I have emailed them but there has been no official reply although some in the industry have said that it was probably done to price the MINI Cooper to be similar as the Volkswagen T1 Camper Van (10220) which has a RRP of SGD$199.90 and the Volkswagen Beetle (10252) at SGD$179.90.
Although I can understand the rationale, I don’t see this going too well as the current local AFOL landscape is still trying to wrap their heads around the 46% price bump for the LEGO Batman Movie Minifigure Series.
I would expect this to this drive more people to not purchase it at local retail and search the neighbouring markets like Hong Kong or Malaysia for better deals instead once the year it up.
Hopefully this price adjustment is only contained to Singapore and doesn’t signal a possible increase in the other regions as well.
In the meantime, if you are thinking of getting the LEGO MINI Cooper now is the time to do so. Come to think of it, maybe THAT is their strategy after all! Good hunting everyone!
